Trans Himalayan
Jeep Safari A fascinating tour, which will take us into
the Ladakh region, a high-altitude plateau north of the Himalaya. Ladakh
is said to be a miniature version of Tibet. The people here are Tibetan
in their culture and religion. Ladakh is well worth the effort involved
in getting there. It is an otherworldly place - mystic gompas perched
on soaring hilltops, ancient palaces clinging to sheer rock walls, and
shattered-looking landscapes splashed with small but brilliant patches
of green. We begin our tour in the capital Delhi, before heading on to
Chandigarh and Nalagarh. Staying overnight at Nalagarh in a heritage hotel,
we drive on to Manali (1926 metres) where we begin our journey up to Leh
(3523 metres). The approach to this exotic region is by road through the
rugged Manali-Leh highway (530 kilometres), which is usually open from
the end of June to mid-October. We drive on to Jispa (3142 metres) via
the high passes of Rothang and Keylong. Next day we move on to Sarchu
crossing Baralacha La Pass (4883 metres). From Sarchu, crossing the second
highest road pass in the world, we will trace our way to Leh, which was
an important stop on the old caravan silk route from China, centuries
ago. We explore the beautiful monasteries around Leh as well as enjoying
a tour to Pangong Tso Lake.

the Holy Ganges A fascinating tour, which brings you a particular
flavour of India - this time, sailing the Ganges, a visit to a holy city
and sightseeing around the erotic temples. This trip not only offers an
authentic insight into the great religious and cultural styles of India
but also includes the chance to call on rarely visited towns and a leading
national game park. We begin in the capital Delhi before heading to Lucknow
in Uttar Pradesh, a city with strong Muslim history. A cycle rickshaw
takes us through the town to the majestic Imambara Tomb with it's roof-top
labyrinth. The highlight, though, is our sail down the Holy River Ganges
in Varanassi if not the world's oldest, certainly one of its holiest cities.
While there we take a step back in time to witness the pageant of Indian
religious rituals as they unfold before us. Next we drive to the complex
of erotically carved Hindu temples at Khajuraho, which were built over
1,000 years ago. Then we go off-the-beaten-track by heading for Orchha,
literally meaning 'hidden place'. It certainly lives up to its name as
it is rarely visited by tourists. Another cultural highlight is the walled
town of Bundi, guarded by the tremendous Taragarh Fort. To complete the
tour we visit Ranthambore Reserve for a game drive and the chance to spot
a tiger. |
